Cal Lee, who has coached St. Louis to 12 straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu football championships, will also become the sport's league coordinator this fall.

The formal announcement was to be made to the ILH athletic directors, who were to meet this morning at a meeting on the Punahou campus.

Lee succeeds Don Botelho, the athletic director at Mid-Pacific Institute and head coach of the Pac-Five varsity football team, who has coordinated the ILH's biggest revenue-producing sports for the past nine years.

Botelho will remain as the state coordinator for football, tasked with interpreting rules handed down by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

He will also continue to coordinate ILH baseball.

Lee, the 1997 Star-Bulletin All-State coach of the year, has led St. Louis to more Prep Bowl championships -- 13 -- than any other coach in the history of the postseason event.

Formerly the ILH coordinator of golf and riflery, Lee will be now be in charge of scheduling football games, handling and channeling complaints and dealing with problems over league procedures, meeting with the officials' association regarding game assignments, negotiating Prep Bowl arrangements, and chairing the postseason all-star selection committee.

Botelho said that ILH executive secretary Clay Benham will be the ultimate authority when it comes to rulings concerning football.

"He will not make any decisions that affect the league," said Botelho when asked if Lee's stewardship of the state's most powerful prep football program might ever present a conflict of interest.

"It's all spelled out under the league's operational procedures."

Botelho said he drew up the 1998 ILH football schedule himself and expects Lee would avoid any conflicts of interest in issues involving St. Louis.

"Whenever there was any issue involving Pac-Five, I stepped aside," said Botelho.
