Little Mari outhits
big Arnie

WHILE boyfriend Jon Sutherland played in a Riviera Country Club golf tourney in L.A., Mari Frey hit balls on the driving range and found big Arnold Schwarzenegger taking a lesson next to her. "I hit a few balls longer than Arnold," Mari said. "But did I mention he's just a beginner? I've been a beginner for about three years." The trip was to see Jon's daughter, Tiffany, graduate from Connecticut College. They made a stop in Denver and dined with Broncos' owner Pat Bowlin and wife, Annabell, and Bronco coach Mike Shanahan. Mari's last luncheon fashion show at the Kahala Mandarin until October is Thursday. TheoDavies convertibles -- Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Jaguar, Volvo and Audi -- will share the spotlight with models ... Suzanne Erler has resigned as Kahala Mandarin P.R. chief ...

Beauty loud and clear

ROBERT Redford's "The Horse Whisperer" has some of the most beautiful scenery and cinematography to be seen in recent films. It's about a man trying to cure the mental problems of a horse and a teen-age girl, both injured in a riding accident. The relationship between Redford, the teen-ager and the animal is heart-warming ... Former Sen. Hiram Fong, ex-Gov. George Ariyoshi and Iolani Headmaster Val Iwashita were among the guests at a party for Iolani grad Justin Li Sunday at the home of his parents, Victor and Arlene Li ...

UH booster Don Murphy of Murphy's says don't let any of those WAC conference breakaway schools ever again play in a sporting event in Hawaii. I agree. Why should we let those ingrates use a trip to beautiful Hawaii as a recruiting tool? Also, isle players they want may say no and go to UH if there are no isle trips ...
