


Jim Forkum, the University of Hawaii at Hilo men's basketball coach for the past three seasons, has resigned to become the men's coach at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., it was announced last night. Forkum resigns as
Vulcans coachForkum had a 29-52 record with the Vulcans, who augmented their NCAA Division II schedule with six or seven games against Division I opponents each season. He was the Pac West Conference co-coach of the year in 1997.
"Coach Forkum's positive and enthusiastic attitude did much to promote Vulcan basketball in this community," said UH-Hilo athletic director Bill Trumbo.
Forkum's resignation came a day after the Vulcans announced the eight-team field for their seventh annual City Bank/Aloha Airlines Big Island Invitational Tournament.
Joining UH-Hilo in the Nov. 27-29 tourney will be Georgia Tech, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin-Green Bay, New Orleans, St. Louis University and Evansville.
RODEO FINALS ON BIG ISLAND: The 10th Hawaii High School State Rodeo Finals, with more than 100 contestants from five islands, will be held June 12-14 at Paniolo Park in Waimea on the Big Island.
There will be competition in Po'o Wai U, double mugging, cutting, saddle and bareback bronc riding, pole bending, team roping, steer wrestling, goat tying, calf roping, breakaway roping, barrel racing and bull riding.
After Sunday's wind-up, finalists will be determined for the National High School Rodeo Finals at Gilette, Wyo., July 20-27.
Gate donations of $5 will help defray travel costs for the national finalists, whose travel will be sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines.

SAND DOUBLES CHALLENGE: The Sand Volleyball Doubles Challenge will be held June 13 at Pearl Harbor's Wentworth sand courts, with B and BB division play starting at 8:30 a.m. and A and Open division action at 1 p.m.
There are cash prizes for Open winners.

GOLF TOURNEY TO BENEFIT UH SOCCER: The Rainbow Wahine Soccer Hui's sixth annual golf tournament will be played on Thursday, June 25, at the Leilehua course, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. The format is three-member team 1-2 best ball.
The entry fee for the University of Hawaii women's soccer program fund-raiser is $120 per player or $360 per team. Spikeless golf shoes will be required.
