‘Corrupter’ role

THE ladies of Halau One Kalakaua know only one song, "E Huli Makou," but they danced it twice by popular demand at the One Kalakaua Senior Living Lei Day program. Puamana -- Mihana Souza, Aima McManus and Iwalani Kahalewai -- provided music. Alice Clay formed the halau, which includes her mom, Betty Tkachenko. The eldest dancer is Eleanor Nitta, 92.

PIANIST John O'Conor stars in Honolulu Symphony concerts tomorrow and Tuesday at the Concert Hall ... Conductor Skitch Henderson opens the Symphony's Starlight season next Saturday at the Waikiki Shell with the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber ...

This year, Charmen's birthday again falls on Mother's Day. Tonight, husband Dennis takes Charmen and their kids, Shaun, 10, and Allison, 7, to dinner ... KHON sports guy Bob Hogue was in the house. David Paul's chef-owner, David Paul Johnson, and his mentor, Salt Lake City restaurateur Max Mercier were in for dinner ... Mari Frey will show Anne Klein's fashions at Thursday's luncheon show at the Kahala Mandarin ...

SUPERSTAR David Copperfield brings "Dreams and Nightmares" May 17-23 to the Concert Hall. He was 19 in 1976 when I reviewed his show at the Pagoda for Daily Variety. We talked and the teen asked, "How can I improve my act?" ... And how did Great Britain's Miss Universe hopeful, Leilani Dowding, get a Hawaiian name? Seems her mom is a Filipina who visited Hawaii and had a friend here named Leilani ... The Victoria Ward Ltd. people were happy to learn Miss Universe Brook Lee's great-great grandmother was a Ward daughter ... John Tilton of Tihati Productions and Yemun Chung of Tom Moffatt Productions are responsible for the big entertainment lineup at Tuesday's Miss Universe Coronation Ball ...

A WHO'S who of isle entertainers performed at the Oahu Cemetery services for hula queen Lani Custino, who died April 14 in Las Vegas. The following day Lani's ashes, wrapped in tapa, were released over the Pali by family members. "It was a brilliant day, a wonderful day for Lani to be set free," said Penny Kelii, a close family friend. Lani's brother, Boyce Rodrigues, sang "Eighteen Yellow Roses," a family favorite, as 18 yellow roses were released over the Pali. Then Lani's sister, Nina Kealiiwahamana, sang "Aloha Oe" ... Condolences also go out to the family of Johnny Akaka, who died April 27. His brothers included U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka and the late Rev. Abraham Akaka ...
