Waihee's employer buys 10-attorney law firm
A Washington, D.C., law firm and lobbying business whose Hawaii lawyers include former Gov. John Waihee is acquiring a Washington and Las Vegas law firm that specializes in representing hotels in labor matters.Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand, which has 185 lawyers including what it calls a long list of major political figures and lobbyists, is acquiring the 10-lawyer firm of Pantaleo, Lipkin & Moss.
In its Hawaii operations, Verner, Liipfert used to employ Republic Party leader Jarred Jossem, who opened his own Honolulu office Friday.
The firm has represented the Bishop Estate.
Oracle, Intel to invest in Time's Road Runner
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. Oracle Corp. and Intel Corp. will buy a stake in Time Warner Inc.'s Road Runner service, which provides high-speed Internet access over cable TV lines, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News.On Oahu, the Road Runner service is offered by Time Warner subsidiary Oceanic Cable.
Under the agreement, which could be announced within the next two weeks, Time Warner will use software from Oracle's majority-owned Network Computer Inc. in its new digital TV set-top boxes, the sources said, making it NCI's second such software contract. In exchange, Oracle will invest an undetermined amount in Road Runner, along with Intel.

LOS ANGELES Atlantic Richfield Co. agreed to buy Union Texas Petroleum Holdings Inc. for $3.3 billion in cash and assumed debt, a move to boost oil production and cut costs in places where the companies have neighboring projects, such as Indonesia and Venezuela.Arco will give $29 a share for Houston-based Union, 41 percent more than Friday's $20.50 closing price. Union shares gained $8, or 39 percent, to close at $28.50 today on the New York Stock Exchange.'
