J.C. Penney Co. said it will close its Windward Mall store by August 1, citing disappointing sales.

The Plano, Texas-based retailer said it will work with the store's 81 employees to attempt to find jobs in the Pearl Ridge Shopping Center and Ala Moana Center stores.

The company will continue to operate its four other department stores in Hawaii, which also include its outlets at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo and the Kaahumanu Center in Kahului.

The store, which opened in 1983, is one of the 75 stores identified in the company's Jan. 27 announcement regarding the closing of underperforming stores, JC Penney said.

"All of our store closing decisions are tough and this one is no exception. Due to business declines in recent years and the store's performance not meeting company expectations, we have decided to close the store," said Tim Penny, district manager.
