Punahou all-state center Onaona Miller, who led the Buffanblu to a state girls' basketball championship and an unbeaten record last season, has committed to Yale University.

The 5-foot-11 Miller was second to Iolani's Erin Stovall in scoring in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last year with a 15.5 scoring average.

She scored in double figures in each game, and played in 59 of 60 quarters. She also averaged 7.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game.

She was a standout at Hilo High School before transferring to Punahou in 1996.

Miller had considered Providence College, Harvard University, Boston College and Indiana State.

"I just liked the New England feeling of the campuses," Miller said when asked why most of the schools she considered were in that region.

She said she narrowed her choices to Providence and Yale after considering their proximity to New York City.

"I loved New York when I went on my trip," she said. "It was my first time and I found it just like the movies."

Miller, who has a 3.7 cumulative grade point average at Punahou, said she will focus on English and other liberal arts courses, with an eye toward a career in journalism.

Miller said Yale head coach Cecelia DeMarco contacted her after she visited Providence.

"They want to play me at the 3 or 4 spots because I'm kind of small," Miller said.

One of her priorities is to improve her strength.

"After watching the Harvard-Stanford game, I knew I would have to hit the weight room," Miller said.

Angel Hopeau, filling in for injured starting guard Kapua Acosta, made up for some early jitters with three key points in the final minutes of play as Waianae squeezed by Moanalua, 28-27, last night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division season opener on the Seariders' court.

Acosta suffered a broken ankle early in the second quarter and was replaced by Hopeau, who committed several turnovers as Waianae was outscored, 12-3, to fall behind, 22-15, at halftime.

But Kristin Chun had three points and three assists in a 9-0 third-quarter run that put Waianae ahead, 24-22. Hopeau then hit a field goal and a free throw for all but one of the Seariders' fourth-quarter points, which were just enough to win it.

Kahea Reinhardt had a game-high 10 points for Waianae.
