in California tournamentGentle struck out six and walked three on the way to her 14th victory against three losses. Cofran also had a single and double in three at-bats for the Wahine (29-3), who were scheduled to play Arkansas and California today in the Sacramento State-hosted tourney.
SHUTOUT WIN FOR UH-HILO: Thomas Ford, Jim Tanaka and Jason Lippert combined on a three-hitter as the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team defeated Lewis-Clark State, 1-0, last night at Hall Memorial Field in Hilo.
Anthony Jackson tripled in the seventh inning and scored the game's only run on Scott Wallis' single off Adam Huxhold, who held the Vulcans to four hits.
WORLD KARATE FINALISTS: Four members of the AAU USA team from Hawaii have reached the finals in several disciplines at the World Karate Organization championships in Orlando, Fla., this week.
Elisa Au, Barbara Chinen and George Kotaka will compete Sunday in the finals of the following disciplines: Short weapons, kobudo, kata, team kata and team kobudo. Also, Sumiko Kobayashi reached the finals in team kata and team kobudo.
The top four finishers in each discipline qualified for the finals.
WAHINE TO HOST GOLF TOURNAMENT: The University of Hawaii women's golf team will host the 13th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Tournament Monday through Thursday at the Kaneohe Klipper course.
Six nationally ranked teams are in the field of 21, including No. 1 Arizona and No. 3 Tulsa.
The UH golfers are Desiree Ting, Linda Appelblad, Katarina Forsberg, Maria Boivie, Melissa Shintani, Mei-Lin Poai and Angie Park.
UH-HILO MEMORABILIA AUCTION: Pending notification of the high bidder, bids of $1,701 for an autographed pair of Nike Air Jordan II shoes and $701 for an autographed 1996 New York Yankees World Series pennant have been accepted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo in its Vulcan Softball Field Equipment Fund auction.
A Michael Jordan-autographed basketball will be held back for auction in a future promotion to help fund the softball field.
UH-Hilo was given the items by an anonymous donor.
ALA WAI PRO SHOP OPENING: Sure Shot Hawaii, the new management company of the Ala Wai Golf Course Pro Shop, invites the public to take part in a three-day grand opening celebration of the renovated facility on March 27-29.
There will be a blessing and opening ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, March 27. Special events also will be held on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.
Sure Shot Hawaii was awarded a five-year management bid contract from the City and County of Honolulu that began on Feb. 5. More than $100,000 in improvements have been made.
The pro shop is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
