Month, speaker
salute womenMEN will never be able to get back to the same position of superiority they perceived they had over women. It was illusion then and is patently transparent today, as the wall between the sexes continues to crumble. Previously, by way of making up for past slights, we had the "Year of the Woman" -- I thought they all were -- and now we have "Women in History Month." (Can you imagine the uproar if a group of males suggested we have a "Year of the Man"?) Image de Hawaii is observing "Women in History Month" by presenting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Inter-American Affairs) Maria C. Fernandez-Greczmiel as keynote speaker at a luncheon Tuesday at the Nehelani Club at Schofield Barracks. THIS is not really a case of women being slighted, but the roles of the two titular characters in Jean Genet's "The Maids" at UH's Earle Ernst Lab Theater are being played by men. That's the way Genet wanted it. More to his liking, in any case ... Darn: actress Michelle Phillips, due to be at tonight's "Moonlight and Magic" benefit for the Alzheimers Association, had to bow out due to a schedule change in filming a "Love Boat" episode ... Nohelani Cypriano celebrated her birthday with her family and friends at Singha Thai Cuisine in Canterbury Place. Channel 9's telegenic anchor/weather person Kim Gennaula helped in the celebration and forecast clear sailing ahead ...
Interact to this!
WHILE I love both the Hawaii Theatre and Manoa Valley Theatre, they share something of a fetish for "interactive theater." That's where the figurative fourth wall is torn down and the audience is urged to join in with the doings on stage. Well, I'm sorry, but it's not my cup of tea. The Hawaii Theatre used it in its fund-raiser "Murder at the Hawaii Theatre" last year, when the audience was asked to guess the killer. And there will be an interactive Western-inspired skit going on stage April 25, when the Hawaii Theatre will do "Denim & Diamonds," this year's fund-raiser ...MVT is really into interaction! Remember "Tony 'n Tina's Wedding" and "Song of Singapore" from previous seasons? This year they're doing "Shear Madness" (opening May 13), which features a "malleable ending" selected by the audience along with another of my pet peeves -- references to local public figures and events. It's been very successful on the mainland, playing 17 years now in Chicago, and if anyone can pull it off, it'll be MVT. But I'll believe it when I see it ... You want more? On April 5-7 MVT is presenting a double bill including "Sunny Side Up" featuring improvisational comedy (with audience suggestions) by the group Loose Screws ... And the first show on MVT's 30th season in September is "Pageant," where the audience rates the contestants in a beauty contest. Spare me! Fortunately they also have some nonparticipatory works on their schedule as well ...
