Show goes on for
Kamehameha songsters

Kamehameha students in grades 9 through 12 will vie for honors in the 76th annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest, taking place at 7:30 p.m. today at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.

Television coverage of the event will begin at 7 p.m. with a 30-minute pre-show special on KHON/Fox, with a simulcast in KINE-FM 105. A rebroadcast is set for 1 p.m. Sunday on KHON/Fox.

"Na Haku Mele Kane: A Tribute to Alfred Alohikea, Mekia Kealaka'i and David Nape" is the theme of the contest, held annually to provide a glimpse into Hawaiian history and culture through traditional mele (song), oli (chant) and hula (dance).

Kapono on the tube

"Island Music, Island Hearts," 8 p.m. KGMB/CBS. The premiere of the latest in this series is called "Kapono -- Home in the Islands," and features the singer and his 25 years in the entertainment business. Henry Kapono came to prominence in the early 1970s as half of the duo C&K, with Cecilio Rodriguez. This special features concert footage and his performance of traditional Hawaiian songs as well as his contemporary music.
