Jazz Blow-Out slated for Sunday

Scores of jazz performers will take to the stage at the Great Hawaiian Jazz Blow-Out '98 Sunday at Bakken Hall at Mid-Pacific Institute in Manoa.

The event, sponsored by the Hawaii Chamber Orchestra Society, will feature Mauricio Smith, the international jazz flutist and recording artist, and the Joseph Batista Band. Batista is a virtuoso keyboard artist who recently won the Southern California Motion Picture Council's "Golden Star Halo Award." Smith was classically trained Puerto Rican Music Conservatory and has played with Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Eartha Kitt and Roberta Flack.

The festival runs from noon to 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students; $20 at the door. They are available at Harry's Music, Duc's Bistro, Mercado de la Raza, Coffee Manoa, Tower Video (Kapiolani), Tower Records (Kahala) and Hungry Ear (Kailua). Call 734-0397.

Learn Navajo weaving

Register now for a special workshop on Navajo rug weaving that takes place July 3 to 6 at the Academy Art Center at Linekona.

Sessions with visiting Navajo weaver Mary Banovic will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. all four days.

Fees for the workshop will be determined by the number of attendees. For 10 or less, the cost is $225 per person plus supplies. The price drops to $175 if more than 10 enroll.

A capital idea

Spend a day visiting downtown's museums and historic sites 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 when Honolulu celebrates A Capital Day Down Capitol Way.

Highlights include tours of Washington Place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and downtown's newest museum, the Honolulu Police Department Museum, will have an exhibition featuring the story of Chang Apana, the officer that inspired the fictional movie character, Charlie Chan.
