Selleck natural
for pageant MCWORK is already underway to prepare for the big Miss Universe Week in Hawaii beginning May 11. Local residents Al and April Masini are volunteering their time and Al's 45 years of experience in television production toward helping stage the event for CBS. No host has yet to be named, but you can bet such people with local ties as Tom Selleck and Bette Midler will have their names floated about. The greatest pairing would be the two of them together! Selleck would seem to be a natural for the network since he has a new CBS series coming out. Judging from his appearance on the David Letterman show the other night, Selleck is no longer promoting the "super nice guy" image. The censors even had to bleep one particularly common four letter expletive he uttered, much to Letterman's amazement. In a discussion on the Winter Olympics, Selleck translated Japanese phrases he'd learned while filming "Mr. Baseball." Apparently one -- aimed at taxi drivers -- called for blunt language ...
SPOTTED at Matteo's was Ross Powers of the USA Snowboard Team. He was celebrating winning a bronze medal in the "Half Pipe" event at the Winter Olympics. He may have to consult with Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati before getting into "Full Pipe" events. Rebagliati, or "Nickle-bagliati" as Jay Leno dubbed him, is the Canadian who tested positive for marijuana and had his gold medal taken away before it was reinstated due to "vague" drug testing rules. That prompted one enterprising fellow to print up T-shirts showing a marijuana plant instead of a maple leaf and the Canadian national anthem retitled, "O Cannabis." ...
Maui on their minds
FORGET Disney World! When the U.S. Women's Hockey Team won the Gold Medal, the TV interviewer asked them their plans. Their collective reply: "We're goin' to Maui!" Maui has received other mentions as well. Early on when Olympic skier Picabo Street won, CBS showed her on the phone to her mother saying, "Get two tickets -- we're going to Maui." ... And Rintje Ritsma, men's speedskating Silver Medalist of the Netherlands, was featured in a spotlight segment in which Maui was not only mentioned, but got nearly five minutes of coverage from Upcountry Maui to Hookipa Beach to Maalaea Harbor. How come? Ritsma has his own training methods. While others worked out in icy climes, Ritsma train on Maui doing everything from cycling to swimming. He's another firm believer in Maui no ka 'oi -- Maui is the best ...MEANWHILE, that collection of overpaid NHL stars representing the U.S. in hockey are going back home to visit their paychecks, having lost three of four games, the final defeat coming at the hands of unknowns from the Czech Republic, 4-1. Those Czechs might want to audition for the NHL and quick ...
Soccer to me
SOCCER maven Jack Sullivan would love to call it "futbol" but it would just get confused with that other game. So he goes along and calls his favorite sport "soccer" like the rest of us. He coaches soccer at the Youth Correctional Facility and his team had qualified to play an exhibition game at Aloha Stadium. HPU coach Frank Doyle fielded a team of adults to play them and supplied uniforms. But when Sullivan, 63, found his team one member short, he became the 11th man, prompting Skippa Diaz to theorize that Sullivan was not only the oldest person to play soccer in the stadium, but also the oldest to play any sport there, period ...
