She enjoys the challenges

It's not difficult for 11-year-old Shauna Leigh Baxa to study hard and do well in school.

"I like the different challenges that we get every day. I just like doing work," said Baxa, sixth-grade student council president at Puuhale School.

Baxa was council representative in the fourth grade and vice president in the fifth grade. She's won almost every quarterly "Best Student in the Class" award since kindergarten and "Excellence in Math" awards in third, fourth and fifth grades.

At home, Baxa does her homework assignments sometimes a week or two in advance, reads lots of books, shares in the household chores, and knows how to budget her allowances, said her mother, Shanelle.

"You really can count on her. She follows instructions."

Student counselor adviser Linda Takai agrees. Baxa is punctual, academically talented and "unusually responsible" for her age, she said.

"Of all the student council presidents I've worked with, she's the most responsible for carrying out her duties," Takai said.

She also does exceptionally well in writing and public speaking.

Baxa, who has a 3.8 GPA, said she has her future mapped out. In six years, she plans to graduate as valedictorian and enter medical school. She wants to be a doctor in internal medicine.
