Sape, Taulealea going to Utah

By Pat Bigold

Leilehua's Lauvale Sape and St. Louis' Sam Taulealea, both standout defensive linemen in 1997, have given verbal commitments to the University of Utah.

Sape, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound three-year starter who began playing football only three years ago, earned a first-team all-state berth. He had eight sacks for the Mules in a six-game Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference season.

"I like Utah's attacking defense, and I like the coaches' philosophy about education - they talk about it so much when they're recruiting you," said Sape.

The 6-2, 300-pound Taulealea was a major force on a defensive line that helped the Crusaders win their 12th Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Prep Bowl championships.

Taulealea earned ILH all-star honors and a place on the all-state second team in 1997.

The first day to sign official letters of intent is Feb. 4.
