Kitchen assistance

Morale at Emergency Medical Services was in critical condition when one of the paramedics suggested that the city ambulance crews put together a departmental cookbook.

Kaneohe paramedic Frannie Chung thought it was a good idea and began collecting recipes. Since paramedics work so closely with police, fire, hospital, water safety and crews from Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic (MAST helicopter), these people also were invited to submit recipes.

"Everybody was enthusiastic," Chung says, and six months later, Chung and co-editor Judy Kakazu, a paramedic at St. Francis Hospital, had "Favorite Recipes by Hawaii's Paramedics," containing over 400 recipes, ready for printing.

Chung said the original plan was to sell the book among themselves, but printing costs were so high that they decided to offer the book to the public. However, "it's all nonprofit," she says, with the money going to cover costs.

To order a copy, send a check for $18.10 per book to Frannie Chung, P.O. Box 4342, Kaneohe HI 96744. The checks should be made out to Frannie Chung.
