Another first-team all-state football player will commit to the University of Hawaii this weekend, the Star-Bulletin has learned.

Iolani's Matt Wright, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker who spearheaded one of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's best defenses, is expected to give his word tomorrow during a home visit by UH's coaches.

In addition to Wright, Waipahu linebacker Lui Fuga, a 6-2, 285-pound first-team all-star in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference, has also committed to Hawaii.

Fuga's football coach, Sam Delos Reyes, confirmed that Fuga was offered a scholarship. Arizona also showed interest.

Wright, a two-year starter, is the second member of the 1997 Star-Bulletin all-state first team to commit to the Rainbows and a significant catch.

"He has great athletic ability," said Iolani head coach Wendell Look, who confirmed that Wright had been offered a scholarship but would not confirm a commitment.

The other 1997 first-team all-stater to commit to UH was St. Louis slotback Craig Stutzmann.

A 1996 first-team all-state player, former Campbell middle linebacker Derek Zoller, is also committing this week, according to Sabers' head coach Darren Hernandez.

Besides Stutzmann and Zoller, other early commitments to UH were received from Kalaheo quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen, Damien lineman Chris Brown, and Campbell linebacker Robby Takara.
