Pearl City hits treys, trims Waipahu

Richard Simbre and Ray Bode each scored two 3-pointers and Kyle Okinaka had another in a 23-12 first-quarter blitz that carried Pearl City to a 53-38 Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball victory over Waipahu last night on the Chargers' court.

Simbre finished with 13 points, including three treys. Justin Shelton added 12 points for Pearl City (2-0) and Bode had 10, including three 3-pointers.

Jerome Williams was the high scorer for Waipahu (0-2) with 12 points.

Nanakuli 56, Campbell 54: At Nanakuli, the Golden Hawks' Joe Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the deciding basket on a putback with just over a minute left.

The Sabers had several chances in the last minute, but missed a 3-pointer and a follow shot on their next possession and failed to connect on another desperation 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Karl Laa scored 15 points and Silas Ah Sui 12 for Nanakuli. Brian Redor had 10 for Campbell.

Kahuku 36, Kaiser 33: At Kahuku, Nainoa Logan hit two free throws with about 30 seconds left to give the Red Raiders a three-point edge and Orlando Wong came up with a steal in the closing seconds to seal the victory.

Kaunaoa McGee scored nine of his 13 points in the last quarter, helping Kaiser close from five points down to 34-33 with a little over a minute to play. But the Cougars missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw chance and Logan made both of his 1-and-1 shots at the other end.

Ryan Lee also had 13 points for Kaiser. Hyrum Peters led Kahuku's balanced scoring with nine.

Kalaheo 54, Kalani 40: At Kalaheo, the Mustangs outscored the Falcons, 17-10, in the third quarter for a commanding 42-29 lead and went on to win handily despite a game-high 22-point effort by Kalani's Everett Frye.

Kaimana Freitas had 15 points, Julian Sensley 12, Levon Freeman 11 and David Abbott 10 for Kalaheo.
