Hodge, an island journalist, shares nostalgic stories of her childhood, taking readers back to Hawaii's early days.

"Ono Ono Girl's Hula": Carolyn Lei-Lanilau, $34.95, 180 pages, University of Wisconsin Press

Collection of autobiographical essays sharing Lei-Lanilau's rebellious youth and troubled marriage. The essays also cover Hawaiian history and touches on the concept of "multiculturalism."

"Star Mana": Ken Carlson, $14, 141 pages, Starmen Press

Carlson gives an overview of the healing powers of local flowers and gemstones, and the focus of each flower and stone's power.

"Pacific Empire": G. Miki Hayden, $14.95, 197 pages, JoNa Books

Nine short stories of what would have been, had Japan won World War II. Each story is told from a Japanese viewpoint and all stories are intertwined.

"Race, Rights, and the Asian American Experience": Angelo N. Ancheta, $18, 173 pages, Rutgers University Press

Asian Americans and the racial discrimination they face because of the "black-white" model of the American legal system.

"Women In Hawaii: Sites, Identities, and Voices": Edited by Joyce N. Chinen, Kathleen O. Kane and Ida M. Yoshinaga, $18, 172 pages, University of Hawai'i Press

Hawaii Literary Arts Council is accepting nominations for the Hawaii Award for Literature. Fiction, poetry, drama and certain types of nonfiction are eligible. Recipient will be selected on his/her literary achievement and relevance to Hawaii. WORKSKHOPS

CONTESTS

Hawaii Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters is accepting applications for the 1998 Literature Competition, for writers 19-29 years old on May 17. Winner receives $10,000. Works must contain "a fictional character who embodies some of the concerns of contemporary America." For application form and rules, mail a self-addressed envelope and $15 check made out to "Hawaii Chapter, National Society of Arts and Letters" to: David W.
