School: St. Andrew's Priory
Activities: Drama, track, belly dancing
Interests: Baking, modeling, cultural arts
College counselor Belinda Chung says even as a sophomore last year, Tanisha King was exploring career possibilities.
And she's a good cook, too
"She is someone who has shown extraordinary maturity in thinking about the future and college," Chung said.
That's why Chung nominated King for this summer's prestigious program sponsored by the National Student Leadership Foundation.
During a two-week "Institute on Law & Advocacy" at Stanford University, King had an opportunity to explore the law and the American judicial system with top students from around the country.
Law is just one of King's interests. She's also involved in photography, art, and modeling. As co-chairperson of her school's cultural arts club, she organizes trips to film festivals, museums and dance concerts.
But her true passion is cooking. She's already started on the path to becoming a chef, and will intern with Chef Jean-Marie Josselin at A Pacific Cafe in the spring.
"I wish I could do other things, too, but I want to concentrate on becoming a chef," King said.
She usually brings the food when the cultural arts club has functions. For the recent French Festival, she cooked poached pears in red wine, apple fritters and french pastries.
King said she gets her love of cooking and of the arts from her father, who makes his living as an artist.
