Hula dances
into Guinness

ALOHA Festivals' Waikiki Hula has made the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records for being the "Largest Hula." Over 3,500 dancers danced on Waikiki Beach to Andy Cummings' "Waikiki" and Jack Pitman's "Aloha Week Hula" Sept. 21, 1996, to mark the Aloha Festivals' 50th anniversary. Two large photos of the dancers are included in the book. That brought more joy to festival officials Janet and Audrey Hyrne and Iwalani Tseu ...

HULA dancer Lorraine Hamade, with her kolohe antics, stole the show Tuesday evening as some of Kapalua's finest came to the Bishop Museum to put on a mini hoolaulea. The holiday evening was presented by the Kapalua Ritz-Carlton and the Kapalua Villas. Lorraine, assistant G.M. at the Villas, reminded me of a young Leinaala Kalama Heine. Chanter Charles Ka'upu, Kapalua's cultural adviser, performed with male dancers. Other Hawaiian entertainment was by Ritz employees and slack key guitarist Michael Lowe. The food by Ritz chef Patrick Callarec was outstanding ...

JIM Nabors' Christmas Special, with a cast of 200 including the Honolulu Symphony, was the best holiday show I have ever seen. Every bit of the Hawaii Theatre stage and every entry way was used by the cast. Many kids in the cast also danced and sang in the aisles. The whole thing was produced and directed by Tom Hansen, who did a marvelous job. A priceless moment came while Jim was singing a serious Christmas song and a little boy and girl sitting onstage just in front of him started pushing and grabbing each other over space. It was hilarious. At the nifty post-show reception at Michel's, Hansen sighed, "Dogs and children ..."about the upstaging.

Cheers to Sunbeam and Sue

HAPPY birthday to Sunbeam Beamer, who celebrated Thursday with family and friends at Natsunoya Tea House. Highlights included Sunbeam's vocals and hula by her brother, Mahi Beamer, and Lani Custino. Hanalei Williams and Dolly Dali (really), plus Kanoe Cazimero dancing hula to the music of the Pua Melia Trio (Pudgy Young, Ann Cazimero and Lavy Deutoro) were a plus for Sue Damon's birthday party, given by husband, Gordon, at their attractive Kahala beachfront home last Saturday. Larry Coleman played the bagpipes. The party was also to mark Sue and Gordon's remarriage ...
