Brothers tangle in Haleiwa surf

Haleiwa's Alii Beach did double duty yesterday as surfers in the men's and women's divisions of the OP Pro battled for $70,000 in prize money in the first event of the G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing.

It was brother against brother as the North Shore's Garrett McNamara sent his brother Liam reeling from the contest.

Kauai's Bruce Irons made his full-time professional debut and celebrated his graduation from high school with a solid charge into the next round of competition. With luck, he might end up in a heat with his older brother Bruce.

David Gonsalves, Kolohe Blomfield, Aaron Lambert and Rainos Hayes of Hawaii went down hard in the 3- to 5-foot waves while Larry Rios, Jay Vieira, Ronnie Yamada and Jason Bogle joined Irons and McNamara in the next round.

In the women's competition, former world champion Pauline Menczer of Australia was bounced out of the contest after a wave slammed her off the shallow reef.

Tara Gilligan was the first Hawaii woman to advance to the quarter-final round.

TAKATSUKI, IGE GREATSKATES: Ha-waii's Alyssa Takatsuki and Jonathan Ige won the Open Juvenile Dance event in the Nov. 5-8 U.S. Figure Skating Association Central Pacific Regional Championships at Salt Lake City.

Takatsuki, 10, and Ige, 16, qualified for the USFSA Junior Olympics March 17-21 in Plano, Texas.

Hawaii's first regional champions in dance were among 16 members of the Hawaii Figure Skating Club to compete at Salt Lake City.

Lt. Col. Terry Walters of Schofield Barracks placed fourth in the Ladies Masters Free Skate to qualify for the Pacific Coast Sectionals Nov. 30-Dec. 6 in Seattle.

MUFI'S SLAM AND JAM: A team of community leaders will take on teens from Ewa Beach and Waipahu boys and girls clubs in the Mufi Hannemann Slam and Jam basketball contest tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Ilima Intermediate School courts, 91-884 Fort Weaver Road, Ewa Beach.

Joining Hannemann on the City Councilman's team are former prep and college players Cavan Scanlan, Al Tufono, Tony Randolph, Glenn Martin, Alan Silva and Fran Villarmia; District Court judge Faauuga Tootoo, the Honolulu Police Department's Tenari Maafala and former TV sports reporter Rick Agan.

A 'talk story' session and meal will follow the competition.

UH SAILORS IN CALIFORNIA REGATTA: The University of Hawaii coed sailing team will take part in the North/South Intersectional regatta tomorrow and Sunday on Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The two-day event, hosted by UC Santa Barbara, will be contested in two Flying Juniors divisions and two Lasers divisions.

In the Lasers, Laura Rehg, Molly O'Brien and Cole Slater are the UH entrants.

On Nov. 21-23, Harrill, Nelson and Slater will sail for UH in the ICYRA Sloop Nationals in Newport, Calif.
