


EL PASO, Texas -- Mark Chapleski of the Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei, shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to tie Tad Holloway of the Cherry Lane Golf Club in Meridian, Idaho, for the second-round lead in the Western PGA Club Professional Championship. Chapleski tied
for golf leadChapleski and Holloway, who had a 68, had 36-hole totals of 5-under 139, two strokes better than a quartet of fellow club pros.
The starting field of 144 was trimmed to the low 70 scorers and ties, with 77 players advancing. Six other Hawaii golfers -- Marc Orlowski, Joe Root, Rodney Acia, Chris Clark, Stefan Carlsmith and Mark Seki -- missed the cut.
BIG SURF PAYDAY FOR ROBB: Hawaii surfer Kalani Robb took the $30,000 first-place prize in Wednesday's Hui O Hee Nalu Backdoor Shootout, an Association of Surfing Professionals special event at Backdoor and Pipeline.
The 20-year-old Robb put on a hit show of tube-riding to top an international field of 40 pros in 5- to 15-foot waves, scoring 47.50 points out of a possible 50.
Kauai's Braden Dias finished in second place and Oahu's John Gomes was third, followed by Australians Mark Occhilupo and Ross Clarke-Jones.
BYUH SPIKES CHAMINADE: Ana Alves put down 17 kills and Arlete Silva had four solo blocks and five block-assists as defending NAIA women's volleyball champion Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade, 15-3, 15-13, 10-15, 15-3, last night at McCabe Gym for its 24th victory without a loss this season.
Silva (12) and Juliana Lima and Vanessa Valansi (10 each) also were in double figures in kills for the nationally top-ranked Seasiders. The Silverswords (16-6) were led by Doris Bikar, with 15 kills and 22 digs.
ALOHA STADIUM BUSES: TheBus Aloha Stadium Football Express will run for Saturday's Western Athletic Conference football game at 7:05 p.m. between Air Force and the University of Hawaii.
The buses service the Windward area, Hawaii Kai, Kahala Mall, Kaimuki, Waikiki, UH and Ala Moana Center. The one-way fare is $2 (no change given). Transfers are not issued or accepted. Passes are not honored.

OFFICIALS' CLINIC: An officiating clinic, sponsored by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association and the National Association of Sports Officials, will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, in the lecture hall at the University of Hawaii physical education/athletic complex.
Sports officials, coaches and administrators are invited to attend.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. At 9, Barry Mano, president of the NASO, will speak on "Game Management/Personal Management." At 9:45, attorney Mel Narol, a special advisor to NASO, will talk about "Officiating the Legal Way." After a lunch break, there will be sessions on basketball officiating and baseball umpiring from noon to 4 p.m., with several guest speakers.

VELASCO INDUCTED: Hawaii's Pete Velasco was among three inductees at the Volleyball Hall of Fame last weekend in Holyoke, Mass.
Velasco was inducted as a player; UCLA's Andy Banachowski as a coach, and Albert Monaco, Jr., as a leader.
Velasco was the captain of the first USA volleyball team in the Olympic Games (1964) and also played on the 1968 Olympic Team.

Star-BulletinGizzi, who will play against the Rainbows tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium, was the Western Athletic Conference defensive player of the year in 1996. The All-America candidate leads the Falcons in tackles with 118. He finished with 128 in 1996.
UCLA's Skip Hicks headlines the three running backs, who will play in the Jan. 18 game on Maui. He will be on the South team coached by Arizona State's Bruce Snyder. So will Mississippi's John Avery, who had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last weekend against Alabama, and Virginia Tech's Ken Oxendine.
Hick has 757 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns on 151 carries. Oxendine has 575 yards and eight touchdowns on 140 carries and Avery has 427 yards on 82 carries and four scores.
"We feel like these three running backs are among the best in the senior class," Hula Bowl CEO Lenny Klompus said yesterday.
