Managing prevention programs

Deborah Trout is guiding the behavoral health plans services to complement the medical coverage offered by Kapi'olani HealthHawai'i.

"We know that many patients who need mental health or substance abuse services do not receive these services," Trout said.

These services can be quite varied, for example, helping people to take the proper medications, use their automobile seat belts, or just learning how to relax. Trout said changing habits can do a lot to preventing high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease.

Trout was senior vice president of managed care with United Behavioral Health, a subsidiary of United Healthcare Corp., one of the country's largest health care management organizations. She worked seven years for the company.

She has 20 years' experience in psychology and managed care.
