Wahine Classic surf meet
By Greg Ambrose
set Oct. 4 at San Onofre
Star-BulletinDuke Kahanamoku surfed at San Onofre, as have generations of California surfers and visiting islanders. The long, gentle waves were kind to old-time surfers who rode huge, heavy redwood planks, and those same waves have made San Onofre California's premier family surf spot today. Now Roxy, maker of surfwear for women, is joining with surf industry giant Quiksilver to host the inaugural Wahine Classic Oct. 4. The contest will feature 120 female surfers of all ages in an atmosphere of friendly, relaxed competition.
Hawaiian culture and attitudes have always played an important part in the ambience at San Onofre, and that tradition will continue with the Wahine Classic. Hawaiian music and crafts and a luau will be held at San Onofre's famous Polynesian-style thatched shack, as will a vintage surfboard display of women's surfboards from the 1930s through '60s.
Ironically, all competition in this wahine-only contest, on longboards, shortboards and paddleboards in categories from menehune to grand masters, will take place at a break called Old Man's.
