Moving up at American Savings

Alvin Sakamoto is awaiting federal approval for American Savings Bank's purchase of Bank of America's Hawaii operations.

"We expect that in the last quarter of '97 or the first quarters of '98," Sakamoto said. He doesn't see any more big purchases on the horizon afterward, he added.

In his new job, Sakamoto takes over management of the accounting, investment and legal departments. He joined the bank in 1986, and most recently served as vice president and controller.

Sakamoto also worked as a senior auditor at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Company and as an accountant at Araki & Fujimori Accountancy Corp.

He earned a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Hawaii. American Savings Bank, a federal savings bank, has more than $3.6 billion in assets.
