Sea Warriors shut out
U.S. International

Sarah Catanzaro and Teresa Bennett scored goals late in the second half to lift the Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over U.S. International yesterday at Atherton Field on HPU's Windward Campus.

Catanzaro ended a 0-0 tie in the 75th minute when she broke away, took a pass from Desiree Holstein and beat USIU goalkeeper Sarah Boutros.

Teresa Bennett added a margin of safety when she scored on a 25-yard shot in the 88th minute.

Sea Warriors goalkeeper Carissa Manangan had to make four saves on the 18 shots USIU took.

OUTRIGGER WINS CATALINA RACE: Outrigger Canoe Club won the men's division of the Catalina Island (Calif.) Outrigger Race Sunday, beating 58 other crews in the 31-mile race from Catalina Island to Newport Harbor Dunes.

Outrigger finished in 4 hours, 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Lanakila of California was runner-up in 4:04:49.

Winning crew members were Wyatt Jones, Marc Haine, Todd Bradley, Walter Guild, Bill Pratt, Tom Conner, Andrew Glatzel, Karl Heyer and Todd Sandvold.

Hawaii teams swept all four of the men's divisions, open, masters (35-over), senior masters (45-over) and malia.

Hawaiian Masters finished sixth overall in 4:12:11; Kona Athletic senior masters finished 17th overall in 4:38:01, and Oahu's Anuenue won the malia division, 20th overall in 4:41:11.

The Outrigger women finished second in Saturday's competition from Newport Harbor to Catalina Island, completing the 27-mile race in 4:25:56. Defending Molokai Channel champion Offshore won in 4:23:14, besting the record field of 48.

Kai Opua finished fifth in 4:39:16 and Koa Kai of Oahu was eighth in 4:43:42. Kauai's Hanalei was 13th in 4:48:41.
