Lucas’ layup proves
a winner for Electricians

J.J. Lucas scored a layup as time expired, giving Electricians Hawaii a victory over Honolulu Ford, 118-116, last night in the championship game of the NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kaimuki High School.

Electricians Hawaii gained possession under its basket after a jump ball tie-up with one second left. Darnell Clavon found Lucas with the inbound pass.

Gilbert Smith led EHwith 28 points. Alika Smith added 24.

Anthony Carter of Honolulu Ford led all scorers with 37 points. Danny Furlong added 30 and Corey Reincke 27.

WAHINE 11TH: The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team is ranked 11th in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 preseason poll.

The Wahine received 802 points. Defending champion Stanford captured 58 of 60 first-place votes for 1,498 points.

No. 2 Penn State received the other two first-place votes followed by Nebraska, Florida, Long Beach State and Michigan State. Rounding out the top 10 are Washington State, Brigham Young, Texas and Pacific.

ASAHI CUP OPENS: Lear Jet won both races in the PH-1 class yesterday, the first day of the inaugural Asahi Super Cup '97 sailing competition off Waikiki.

Lear Jet, skippered by co-owner Jon P. Courter, beat five entries in the PH-1 class. Urban Renewal and Sundance Hawaii split two races in the J-24s division.

The event ends today with two races. The Cup was designed for visitors to Oahu who enjoy competitive sailing but aren't able to ship their vessels here.

KATZ SURPRISE ENTRY: Former University of Hawaii All-American Yuval Katz has delayed his return to his Greek professional team to compete in this weekend's Emporio Armani Hawaii Beach Volleyball State Championships at Queen's Surf Beach.

Katz and Adam Lockwood, who finished second in last weekend's Riggers Classic, are seeded second. Riggers champions Stevie Li and Alika Williams are the top men's seeds. Pono Ma'a and Keoki Shupe are seeded third.

Chastity Nobriga, part of the winning women's team last week, and Janice Harrer are top seeded. The No. 2 seeds are Lisa Strand-Ma'a and Dawn McDougall.

HARDMAN NAMED: Scott Hardman has been named interim head swimming coach at the University of Hawaii replacing Daniel Arakaki, who has taken an administrative position with the athletic department. Athletic Director High Yoshida made the announcement yesterday.

Hardman has been a part-time assistant the past nine years. He swam for UH from 1979 to 1982. He and Arakaki were team captains during their senior year.

Arakaki compiled a combined 100-126 record as head coach of the men's and women's teams.

HAWAII OUSTED: At Homestead, Fla., Hawaii lost two games yesterday to fall from championship bracket play in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for 18 year olds.

Georgia pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of five errors for a 12-7 triumph. Then New York limited Hawaii to three hits in a 6-1 victory.

HAWAII REBOUNDS: At Broken Arrow, Okla., Kenton Oates held Hawaii to three hits to lead the Oklahoma Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Hawaii Rainbows in the CABA World Series for 13 year olds yesterday.

Hawaii came back later in the day to defeat the Illinois Brewers, 6-3, to even its record at 1-1 in championship bracket play.

Kila Kaaihue had three hits and Jason Peters pitched four shutout innings for Hawaii.

TWO BIG VICTORIES: At Omaha, Neb., Hawaii blanked Georgia, 13-0, and defeated Ohio, 8-2, in the championship bracket of the CABA World Series for 12 year olds yesterday.

Keahi Kapana had three hits in the first game while Davin Nakasone fanned nine and allowed just four hits in the second game.

Hawaii plays Iowa in an elimination game today.

KAIMUKI WINS: At San Bernardino, Calif., Kaimuki scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Washington, 6-5, in the Little League Majors Division West Regional yesterday.

FRESNO BEATS HAWAII: At San Diego, Hawaii suffered its second loss in the World Boys Baseball Championship tournament yesterday, 9-4 to Fresno.
