Best bets for weekend fun

Olomana, the Lim family, Aunty Genoa Keawe and Palani Vaughan are among the performers who will take part in the 20th Annual Ho'ike at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday at the Ron Bright Auditorium, Castle High School.

For two decades, the Ho'ike, directed by Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt, has showcased hula on the Windward side of Oahu.

This year's 20th anniversary event features Keawe, Vaughan, Halau Keali'ionalani and Kana'e tomorrow and the Lim family from Kohala, Olomana, Halau Keali'ionalani and Kana'e on Saturday. Nalani Olds will emcee.

Admission is $12.50 and $15 for each event. For tickets, call 259-9253 or 259-8612.

Dance, music, film at festival

Chastity Bono will be the featured speaker at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the opening night of the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Festival.

The festival, which runs through Aug. 23, includes film screenings, dance performances, visual arts exhibits and theater.

Tomorrow's event at the Hawaii Theatre also will feature performances by Robert Cazimero & Leina'ala, Peter Espiritu & the Tau Dance Theater, the Honolulu Gay Men's Chorus and others. The film, "Inside Out," will be screened.

Tickets are $55 for the show and a party at Indigo Restaurant, $15 for the show only. Information: 941-0424, ext. 18.

Slack key artists at museum

It's still free after 15 years, courtesy of Bank of Hawaii, and this year's Bankoh Ki-Ho'Alu Gabby Pahinui Slack Key Festival becomes the centerpiece of the new "Fun Days" at Bishop Museum this Sunday.

Bank of Hawaii is using their 100th anniversary to sponsor a free day at Bishop Museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The slack-key portion runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the museum grounds.

Talent this year includes Matthew Swalinkavich, John Cruz, the Native Hawaiian Band, Ozzie Kotani, George Kuo, Brother Noland and a whole posse of Pahinuis.

Batons will twirl at Blaisdell

Baton twirlers will abound at Blaisdell Arena as the 18th World Championship of Baton Twirling takes place tomorrow through Sunday.

The event begins each day at 8 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m.
