Waialae title by six strokesTomori, a University of Oregon graduate who won the All-Services Invitational earlier this year, finished six strokes ahead of Anna Umemura.
Tomori drilled 30-foot birdie putts at the third and seventh holes in playing the front nine 2 under par. In Monday's first round, she took a quadruple-bogey 7 at the 16th to mar an otherwise fine round of 76.
"I can't remember when I last did that," said Tomori, who qualified in the National Women's Publinx Championship last month before losing in the second round.
Umemura, who heads for the University of Tennessee as an incoming freshman in the fall, had a 74--155, at the Waialae Country Club course.
"Christel played so solid both days," said Umemura, who, along with Tomori, will play in the HSWGA Stroke Play Championship next month at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
It's the final "major" event for local women and Umemura will be trying for a sweep after victories in the first two -- the Jennie K. and the HSWGA Match Play Championship.
Low-net honors went to Faith Inoshita, a 22-handicapper at Waialae, who had a 36-hole score of 135, winning co-championship honors for the 42nd annual event.
4-BALL DELAYED: Heavy rains and standing water forced postponement of yesterday's qualifying round for the Aloha Section PGA 4-Ball Match Play Championship at the Oahu Country Club.
Eight two-man teams were still on the course when play was halted yesterday afternoon. The event was to resume this morning followed by the first round.
The second round was set for this afternoon with semifinals and finals tomorrow, weather permitting.
The Castillo family recorded the two low rounds that were played yesterday. Brothers Rick and Ron Jr. carded four-under 67s. Ron Sr. and son Michael were second at 68.
Rick Castillo, head pro at Wailea Resort, scored one of two aces in yesterday's qualifying round. Both Castillo and Hilo Municipal pro Rodney Acia aced the 149-yard No. 7.
FISHER ON HIS WAY: Maui resident Steve Fisher set off last Friday to pursue his dream of sailing his homemade windsurfing rig between Southern California and Hawaii.
Fisher paddled his 18-foot craft out of Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles and was accompanied by friends in a sailboat for several hours, as well as the crew and lifeguards from Bay Watch Productions, according to Jai On Berger.
Fisher is in good spirits and determined to sail all the way to Kaanapali on Maui, despite several days of weak winds, Berger said yesterday. Once he catches the northeast trade winds, Fisher should make good time, Berger added.
Besides satisfying his goal of being the first to accomplish such a feat, Fisher hopes to draw attention to the effort to protect North Beach in Kaanapali from development.
Fisher will maintain contact through radio transmissions to commercial aircraft flying westward across the Pacific.
ADDITIONS: The following girls were omitted from the list provided the Star-Bulletin of the Asics Rainbow Volleyball Club 12's: Tamari Miyashiro, Lacey Lavarias, Lori Nakamura, and Hokulii Tamayori.
Also, the 16-2's finished 55th out of 344 teams, not 63rd as reported.
