SNEAK PREVIEWS

Nothing to Lose (Star rating unavailable)

A frustrated ad executive kidnaps the carjackers who tried to rob him, and the two ultimately team up to take vengeance on the exec's boss, whom the executive thinks is sleeping with his wife. Stars Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence. (R) Showings Saturday, 7:15 p.m. at Kahala and Restaurant Row, 7:30 p.m. at Kapolei and Pearlridge West.

CONTINUING

Batman & Robin

Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, a sultry eco-villain plotting toxic revenge on the human race, is the main reason to see this fourth Batman movie. Stars George Clooney, Chris O'Donnell, Alicia Silverstone and Arnold Schwarzenneger are saddled with an uninspired script. (PG-13) Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row

Con Air

The tale of a loner hero who walks the thin line between good and bad, "Con Air" provides quite an exciting flight before it crashes and burns in an unnecessary climax-upon-a-climax. Stars Nicolas Cage, John Cusak, John Malkovich. (R) Kahala, Kapolei, Mililani, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row

Face/Off

A lack of dramatic structure and a sense of when to quit are set off by a provocative premise, virtuoso direction and dazzling performances from leads Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. The two square off and literally change roles partway through the movie, bringing lots of old-fashioned viewing pleasure. (R) Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Pearlridge, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 1

Hercules

Disney's funniest, jazziest animation since "101 Dalmatians," "Hercules" is gorgeous filmmaking. It's also full of personality, with Tate Donovan as the hero, Susan Egan, Danny DeVito, and as Hades, James Woods, doing his quick-talking shyster bit better than ever before. (G) Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Plot and human characters are given little consideration in this "Jurassic Park" sequel, but the special effects are astounding. Never before have imaginary, extinct animals been so convincing as aggressive, active antagonists. (PG-13) Cinerama, Kapolei, Pearl Highlands

Men in Black

Funky, fitfully clever goof on the UFO myth of secret government agents who keep track of extraterrestrial visitors. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith team up to fend off a half-coherent interplanetary menace. Kid stuff, with a certain amount of style. (PG-13) Enchanted Lake, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Laie, Nanakuli, Pearlridge, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 3

My Best Friend's Wedding

This skewered variation on jealousy stars Julia Roberts, who decides, after her best friend and former lover becomes engaged to someone else, that he is the man for her. Skillfully engaging, "Wedding" also has something to say about how we live, act, commit and relate. (PG-13) Kahala, Kailua, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Mililani, Laie, Pearl Highlands, Restaurant Row

Out to Sea

The plotting in this Walter Matthau-Jack Lemmon vehicle is by-the numbers. The duo play two grumpy golden-agers who discover they're never too old to fall in love after they sign on as dance hosts on a Caribbean cruise. Mild comedy and hijinks ensue. (PG-13) Kahala, Kailua, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row

Speed 2: Cruise Control Sandra Bullock stars in the "Speed" sequel, but Keanu Reeves declined to return. So Bullock's character, Annie Porter, and new squeeze, Alex (Jason Patric) vacation in the Caribbean where their cruise ship is taken over by an evil scientist (Willem Dafoe) bent on destruction. The leads score in their roles and the end of the voyage is truly spectacular. (PG-13) Kam Drive-In, Pearl Highlands

Temptress Moon

Beautiful to look at, this saga of crime, corruption, drugs, prostitution, rape and general decadence set in 1920s China is like a Chinese style "Gone With the Wind." Chen Kaige directs Gong Li and Leslie Cheung in this melodrama. (R) Varsity

Ulee's Gold

Peter Fonda makes an affecting screen comeback as Ulee Jackson, a taciturn figure who finds redemption late in life. Fonda captures keen, down-home intelligence and no-nonsense practicality in this hushed, unadorned study of the human spirit, ordinary lives and the dignity of hard work. (R) Varsity

Wild America

Based on the lives of the Stouffer brothers, three siblings who took to the road in the '60s to film wild animals, this sunny, nostalgic adventure stars "Home Improvement's" Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa and Scott Bairstow. (PG) Kam Drive-In, Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West
