While others frolicked in the sun and surf, Connie Liu was cleaning Kalanianaole Highway. While others enjoyed their Christmas gifts, she was entertaining children at Shriners Hospital.
An ambassador of goodwill
And while others popped fireworks, she was selling buttons and sodas at First Night festivities.
As a member of the Interact club at Kalani High the past two years, Liu finds good reason to dedicate much of her high school life to volunteer work.
"It's such a good feeling to share and do what you can for other people," said Liu, the daughter of Gloria and Andrew Liu. She will be a senior this fall.
Her sharing landed her the EF Ambassador scholarship, based on community service.
Liu will embark this month on an 11-day educational tour to England, Belgium, France and Switzerland. "I'm really excited about going. I get to visit the places I read about."
She received the scholarship for her idea "Bread for the Hungry." Her proposal calls for high school students and adults from area Rotary clubs to collect leftover food from school cafeterias and distribute it to homeless people.
Aware of the amount of cafeteria food that goes to waste, Liu said she wants "to give the food to people who really need it." She's uncertain if she'll be able to implement "Bread for the Hungry" come fall. For now, though, she's eager to meet the other scholarship winners from across North America.
