Cafe scene expands: A new cafe opened Sunday on the corner of Dole Street and University Avenue. Kaimana Cafe, specializing in salads, sandwiches, Chinese food, and barbeque and spicy dishes, is open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily.

The cafe is at 1442 University Ave. More parking is available across the street from 8:30 p.m. until closing, Monday through Saturday; and all day Sunday.

Aisle file: Sample "natural" beef free of antibiotics and steroids at cooking demonstrations 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Sack N Save in Waikele and by the stadium; Saturday at Foodland on Beretania and in Kaneohe; and Tuesday at Foodland in Market City and Hawaii Kai. Free. Maui residents can sample the "natural" beef 9:30 to 1 p.m. June 13 at Foodland in Kihei and Pukalani. Call 737-7352.

Benefit buffet: To raise funds for Friends of the Children's Advocacy Center, Bon Ton Roule performs while diners enjoy a barbecue buffet supper, 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Dixie Grill restaurant, 404 Ward Ave. Cost: $50 ($35 tax deductible). Call 599-2955. The restaurant opens to the public June 12.

Lyon Arboretum showcase: Saturday, Chef Kelvin Ro of Kahala Moon will demonstrate his roasted chicken summer rolls with ginger cilantro pesto and spicy Vietnamese vinaigrette, caesar salad with anchovy vinaigrette, macadamia nut crusted mahimahi with spicy mango salsa, and a Laotian-style mochi rice dessert.

Russell Siu, chef /owner of 3660 On The Rise, will have a surprise menu on Tuesday.

Both classes are part of the "Chef Showcase VII: A Cooking Extravaganza" and will be held from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. in the upstairs classroom. Cost: $12-$22. Register at 988-7378.
