A youthful focus for Pomare

Cheryl Schaefer takes over as general manager of Pomare International Corp. to operate a series of specialty shops for younger, trendy shoppers. This includes Italian fashion lines marketed in Hawaii for the first time.

The first store, Trends Milano, opened in April at Whalers Village on Maui.

"We're also working on several other European and American designer brands to bring them to Hawaii and the Pacific rim, Guam and Saipan," Schaefer said.

Pomare wants to set up 12 of the new stores in Hawaii, the mainland and the Pacific. The focus is on the shopping trends of eastbound visitors, she said.

She has been vice president of merchandising and retail at Pomare since 1990. Schaefer earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from San Jose State University in California.
