Chefs Bearded

Hawaii chefs Sam Choy, Jean-Marie Josselin and George Mavrothalassitis will be honored at Monday's seventh annual James Beard Foundation awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the New York Marriott Marquis.

Choy of Sam Choy's Restaurants and Josselin of A Pacific Cafe are among five nominees for Best American Chef Northwest; Alan Wong of Alan Wong's Restaurant holds the 1996 title. Mavrothalassitis, senior executive chef at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, is among 30 chefs preparing the black-tie dinner.

Closer to home than NYC: Asian-spiced pheasant with roasted almond polenta tops the repertoire at A Midsummer Night's Feast, with silent auction and entertainment, 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki; $150, benefiting Ballet Hawaii. Call 988-7578.

Chow Fun: Eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture. Thus, one can savor a selected first course for up to eight people, at eight selected restaurants, for $88. The vehicle is a new "Wok for Cure" card, with proceeds benefiting research of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

The restaurants are Sam Choy's Restaurant, Dynasty, Eastern Garden, Golden Dragon, Hee Hing, Legends Seafood, Panda Cuisine, and Royal Garden.
