The old and the new meet in "Musical Encounter: Opera," being televised at 7 p.m. Saturday on KHET.
Encounter with old and new
The program combines one of the first "Musical Encounter" programs, a 1973 broadcast of solos performed by young regional winners of the Metropolitan Opera auditions, with a new "Encounter" taped this year. The latter presents footage of the 1996 Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula Competition, a performance by the youthful Halau Hula Ohana and a demonstration at Kapalama Elementary School by 12-year-old Sean Kennard. Kennard, winner of the Chopin International Piano Competition held in the Pacific, demonstrates the difference between the music of Chopin and of Mozart.
"Musical Encounters" was created by Sylvia Kunin and the late Nino J. Martin.
