Kahala Del Rey, Leslie-Ann Lum

Comedy runs in his family

NYUCK, nyuck, nyuck: Two original members of the musical revue "Forever Plaid" at the Hula Hut in Waikiki have moved on to other showbiz ventures. Andrew Sakaguchi, for instance, is one of those but he's been replaced by Darren Server. And while that name may not sound familiar, he should be good at serving up comedic shtik in the show - Darren is the grandson of the original Curly of the Three Stooges! Not only that, but he took Jennifer Jason Leigh to his senior prom. Now there's something to make you go "Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck"! ...

SURFING without a net: Phil Edwards, the first surfer to ride the Banzai Pipeline way back in the early '60s, visits Reyn's Ala Moana store on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., to introduce a new collection of aloha shirts and shorts. Edwards has a lot of firsts: Under the Hobie surfboard label he had the first "signature" board in the sport that sold in the '60s for the then-princely sum of $175. His signature boards now start at about $700. The Four Seasons Hotel on Maui had one of Edward's big wave boards on sale for $3,000! Edwards was also the first surfer to be voted Surfer magazine's world's best by its readers. And he designed the Hobie catamaran, which made his employer, Hobie Alter, a millionaire. Hawaii enriched Alter in other ways, as well, claiming isle model Kahala Del Rey as his bride ...

"HAWAII Five-O" nut Mike Quigley, who maintains the most complete Internet web page on the Jack Lord series and is keeping an eye on the new "Five-O" pilot being shot, notes that with Gary Busey being cast opposite head detective Russell Wong in the show, it might well be subtitled, "The Buddy Haole Story." ... And someone tracked down the reason why O.J. witness Mark Fuhrman was in the Yankee dugout on opening day. Turns out his brother is a longtime friend of Yankee pitcher David Wells. There goes the theory that he was there to throw out the first glove ...

Crowned yet again

IN 1987, Leslie-Ann Lum was named Miss Hawaii Teen USA. Now she's added a second crown to her collection, having been selected as Miss Hawaii USA 1997 at the formal homecoming celebration of her predecessor, Brook Lee, who went on to win the Miss USA title. In between titles, Lum has been quite busy, modeling in fashion shows, on TV commercials and in print ads, but she's not just another pretty face. She also managed to graduate from Punahou and at UH she earned a 4.0 grade point and was graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Lum spent several summers studying international law and foreign trade and investment at the American University of Paris and the University of Hong Kong. The last three years she's spent in New York getting a law degree from Cornell. Looks to me like Lum stands a realistic chance of enabling Hawaii to win two Miss USA titles in a row! ...

BUZZING right along: Now here's a guy who knows how to reach out and touch someone. Waaaaaay out! Moon walker Buzz Aldrin was in town attending the AT&T Information Transfer System contract signing. Buzz buzzed in to visit his son, who lives on the North Shore ... March 21 was a day of debuts in the home of Paul Revere, ex-of the Raiders. Wife Sydney, on leave from "Legends in Concert," debuted in "Six Degrees of Separation" at Diamond Head Theater, in a decidedly un-Marilyn Monroe like role, and a second debut occured in Boise, Idaho, where Revere's first grandchild, Lily, was born ...

It could have been Jeremiah

EVER wonder how Chelsea Clinton got her name? President Bill Clinton says it was after Judy Collins rendition of "Chelsea Morning," and that his favorite album is her "Colors of the Day." Collins will appear in concert with the Symphony April 11 & 12 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. And in Washington, they play "Colors" whenever Clinton enters a room! ... And finally, friends of restaurateur Michel Martin gathered yesterday at a Cascada luncheon honoring him on his 90th birthday. And many more! ...
