Toward healthier Filipino food

Dr. Charlie Y. Sonido will lead the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii into several new programs to "bring physicians closer to the community."

"We will develop a healthy Filipino diet, like the Hawaiian diet used by Gov. Cayetano," Sonido said. "We are just starting to develop it."

The association also will translate patient education materials into Filipino dialects, and hold a health fair in May. Other programs include scholarship grants, free clinics, and medical missions. Past projects have included the Aloha Medical Missions and the free Bayanihan Medical Services at the Institute of Human Services.

Sonido is affiliated with Queens, Kuakini, St. Francis-Liliha, St. Francis-West, and Kapiolani at Pali Momi hospitals.

He also is publisher and executive editor of the Hawaii Filipino Chronicle, a semi-monthly newspaper.
