Barnes & Noble: American Girls Club meets 5 p.m. at the Kahala Mall bookstore. Madeline visits young readers at 7 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday and Sunday.


Kaimuki Library: Preschool Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays through Feb. 27. Call 733-8422.

Waipahu Library: Story times in January begin 10:30 a.m. Thursdays for preschoolers, and 11 a.m. Saturdays for older children. Call 675-0358.


"Lyle the Crocodile": The jazz-loving, cat-terrorizing character from the children's book comes alive in a Honolulu Theatre for Youth production, 4:30 p.m. at Richardson Theatre. Second show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general, $7.50 students, $5 youth and seniors. Recommended for ages 6 and up. Call 839-9885.


Bamboo Jungle Journey: Children ages 3 to 5 learn about one of the most useful plants, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hawai'i Nature Center. Costs $7. Reserve at 955-0100.

Aina Haina Library: Winter Reading Program runs through March 1. Preschoolers through sixth-graders can read a book a week for weekly incentive prize.


Incredible Insects: Children ages 3 to 5 go on a bug safari and make a craft to take home, 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Hawai'i Nature Center. Costs $7. Reserve at 955-0100.

Whale Watch Weekend: Learn why the humpback whales come to Hawaii, see a training session at Sea Life Park then ride aboard the Navatek in search of the ocean giants, Feb. 8 and 9. The morning sessions cost $25 for ages 10 to 12, $35 ages 13 and up. Call 259-6476.
