OPENING TOMORROW

Jerry Maguire

This is a modern morality play in which Tom Cruise plays a sports agent who dishonors himself by being honest. See review at right. (R) At Kailua, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

Mars Attacks!

Tim Burton's cult sci-fi comedy is miscast as an elaborate, all-star extravaganza. Instead of the uproarious humor that might have ensued from the material, there is only wonderment at the bizarre imaginations and the skills of the fimmakers. (PG-13) At Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki.

The Preacher's Wife

The Rev. Henry Biggs (Courtney Vance) is in the throes of a crisis of confidence and asks for divine intervention. Help is sent in the form of a handsome angel named Dudley (Denzel Washington). See review on Page B-1. (PG) At Cinerama, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Restaurant Row, Pearlridge

SNEAK PREVIEWS

My Fellow Americans (Star rating unavailable)

James Garner and Jack Lemmon are two former chief executives who hate each other but are thrown together and on the road dodging operatives who want to track them down because of a scandal brewing at the White House. (PG-13) Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Kahala, 8:15 p.m. at Pearlridge.

One Fine Day (Star rating unavailable)

This baby-boomer romantic comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney is about ways to balance kids and a career. (PG) Saturday, 6:05 p.m. at Restaurant Row, 7:05 p.m. at Kapolei, 7:30 p.m. at Kahala and Pearlridge West.

CONTINUING

Daylight

Sylvester Stallone is in a familiar hero role when a group of people are trapped in the Holland Tunnel after an explosion. There's little suspense, and no villain to boo, so despite Stallone's muscle flexing the movie's a bit of a bore. (PG-13) At Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki

The English Patient

This adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's romantic novel of wartime passion packs all the adventurous and emotional wallop of "Casablanca" and all the coolheaded intellectualism of some scholarly treatise on the futility of war. Stars Ralph Fiennes, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche. (R) At Varsity.

Jingle All the Way

The one joke of the premise - a busy executive (Arnold Schwarzenegger) spends Christmas Eve searching all over town for the only toy his young son wants and finds himself in direct competition with another frustrated dad (Sinbad) - is never developed into any real comedy. (PG) At Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row

Looking for Richard

Al Pacino's meditation on William Shakespeare's "Richard III" is a really clever cinematic crib sheet that will be referred to by America's English students. (PG-13) At Marina.

Microcosmos

This French documentary about insect life is funny, breathtakingly beautiful, sometimes disturbing and always absorbing. (G) At Marina.

The Mirror Has Two Faces

Barbra Streisand's ugly duckling-turned-swan romantic comedy is a staggeringly obsessive expression of the importance of appearances, good looks and being adored. (PG-13) At Kahala, Kailua, Kapolei

101 Dalmatians

Where the 1961 animated "101 Dalmatians" boasts both style and substance, the live-action remake has neither. (G) At Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Laie, Mililani, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row

Palookaville

Inspired by Italian "common man" serio-comedy, "Palookavillle," transplanted to New Jersey, is a homage, delivered with style. Vincent Gallo, Adam Trese and William Forsythe play losers reduced to absurd attempts at criminality. (R) At Marina.

Ransom

The young son of a tycoon (Mel Gibson) is abducted and held for $2 million ransom. Gibson drags viewers through every conceivable emotion and Rene Russo does a fine job showing a mother's anguish. (R) At Kahala, Kapolei, Nanakuli, Pearlridge West

Set It Off

Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise play housing project women who, with everything stacked against them, explode. (R) At Pearlridge West

Space Jam

Basketball megastar Michael Jordan and cartoon megastar Bugs Bunny team up for this clever, cute, rambunctious mix of animation and live action. (PG) At Kahala, Kailua, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Laie, Mililani, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row

Star Trek: First Contact

Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) leads the USS Enterprise in an attack on a Borg spacecraft. Several of the Borg head to Earth, where they attempt to sabotage the past. (PG-13) At Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row
