Shaheed Nelloms, a 5-foot-11 shortstop from Decatur, Ga., has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Hawaii starting with the 1998 season. UH signs shortstop
Nelloms is a senior at McNair High School, where he also plays football and basketball. He hit .471 as a junior with a .981 fielding average.
A Mizuno Prep All-American, Nelloms was named to Collegiate Baseball's Top 100. He is picked as the top infielder in Georgia and is a three-time all-county selection.
Nelloms is the fourth player signed during the early period by the Rainbow staff.

Led by Waianae's Brian Pacheco, 10 Hawaii surfers advanced to round two of the men's event. Also qualifying were Shawn Sutton, Liam McNamara, Noah Budroe, Mikala Jones, Jason Gantz, Jun Jo, Brock Little, John Gomes and Myles Padaca.
The top opening-round score was posted by Australia's Taj Burrow, who received 22 points out of a possible 30 in the challenging 3- to 5-foot waves. Thirty-six surfers advanced to today's round.
In the women's contest, Tahiti's Patricia Rossi earned the two highest wave scores to top the first-round qualifiers. Also advancing to today's main event from Hawaii are Melissa Proud, Megan Abubo, Sarah Livermore, Keala Kennelly and Melanie Bartels.
Three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin will join Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd in the Senior Skins Game at the Mauna Lani Bay South Course on the Big Island Jan. 25-26. IRWIN IN SKINS GAME
Floyd has won the event three years in a row and is the all-time leading Senior Skins money winner with $960,000.
Irwin, who is the touring pro for Kapalua on Maui, has won 20 PGA Tour titles and will be making his first Senior Skins appearance.
