Akebono, Musashimaru,
Kaio are 8-1

FUKUOKA, Japan - Grand champion Akebono had a narrow escape today as he scored his eighth victory against one defeat and kept a share of the lead with Musashimaru and Kaio in the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo tournament.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, crushed out Tosanoumi but fell at almost the same time as his opponent. Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, drove out Takatoriki and Kaio forced out Musoyama.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe of Hawaii, was twisted down by Naminohana and slipped to 3-6. In the juryo division, George Kalima (5-4) from Hawaii slapped down Mutetsuyama and William Hopkins (4-5) from Hawaii forced out Kushimaumi. In sandanme, Hawaii's Eric Gasper (1-4) slapped down Kyokunankai.


Pac West honors
to Warfield

Hinano Warfield, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Chaminade University, has been voted the Pacific West Conference women's volleyball Player of the Week.

It is the second time this season Warfield has won the honor.

She had 56 kills, 44 digs and five aces in four matches last week.

Aitofi Tautua'a of the University of Hawaii at Hilo was an honorable mention selection. She had 34 kills, 23 digs and two blocks last week.

In the final PWC statistics, Tautua'a was the top hitter with a .281 percentage.

Chaminade's Danielle Robins was third (.254), Kim Clissold fourth (.230) and Doris Bikar eighth (.219).

Robins paced the conference in kills-per-game average (4.31). Tautua'a was third (3.60) and Bikar eighth (2.78).

The Silverswords Karlen Porter led in aces per game with 0.60. Robins was fourth (0.40) and UHHilo's Heather Campbell was ninth (0.32).

Porter was second in assists per game (10.74). The Vulcans' Heather Wride was fourth (8.81).

Campbell was fourth in blocks per game (1.17), Clissold finished sixth (1.00), Chaminade's Boo Arnold was eighth (0.88) and UHHilo's April Jacobson 10th (0.77).



BASEBALL RAINED OUT

Yesterday's Hawaii Winter Baseball games were postponed by rain.

The game at Maui's War Memorial Stadium between the Hilo Stars and the Maui Stingrays has not been rescheduled yet.

The Honolulu Sharks and West Oahu CaneFires will attempt to make up yesterday's game as part of a doubleheader starting at 11:30 today at Hans L'Orange Park.



OP PRO SURFING ON HOLD

Stormy conditions closed down the contest site at Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park yesterday, forcing contestants in the OP Pro Surfing Championships to wait for a better day.



HAWAII PADDLERS THIRD

At Raiatea, Tahiti, a team of women paddlers from the Kailua Canoe Club, supplemented by four Outrigger and Lanikai paddlers, finished third in the 26-mile Havaiki Nui Va'ahine race Nov. 7.

Punaruu of Tahiti won the event with a time of three hours, 27 minutes, 47 seconds.

Hawaii's time was 3:30:55, just 11 seconds away from taking second place.

Paddling for Hawaii were Sonya Lambert, Cindy Lou Nash, Sandy Combis, Krissy Ornellas, Makanani Wong, Cathy Colin, Lesline Conner, Carleen Ornellas, Libby Fulk, Lisa Livingston, Mary Smolenski and Nicole Wilcox.



VULCAN MEN RANKED 14TH

The University of Hawaii at Hilo men's cross-country team is ranked No. 14 in the final NCAA Division II poll.

The Vulcans, second in the NCAA West Regional and winners of the Pacific West Conference title, qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships Saturday at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif.

Making the trip for UH-Hilo will be Preston Aronson, Albert Ah Sing, Ryan Cabalse, Steven Gonzales, Matthew Titcombe, Juan Vega and Fidel Zavala.
