Claudia Kahalekulu, Tura Nagatoshi

This woman works
in a man’s world

IT'S a surprise to learn the manager of the Men's Department at Liberty House Ala Moana is a woman, Claudia Kahalekulu. Claudia, who also manages the Children's Department, does not believe in this "It's a man's world" talk. Claudia is a mother of two sons Derek, 34, and Daren, 30, and three grandchildren. She said if it weren't for her husband Albert, who helps with ironing, cooking and vacuuming that he learned when he was a boarder at Kamehameha, "I couldn't give the job the hours I think it needs." Claudia also praises her sales staff. "I tell them all the time how important they are." And she calls Edith Herrera and the others in alterations her "miracle workers" ...

Tura gets Makalena

TURA Kahaleanu Nagatoshi is particularly happy about being named superintendent of the city's Ted Makalena Golf Course. That's because she grew up playing golf with the late Makalena, a Hawaiian Open winner. Tura started playing golf at Waialae at age 6 with her dad and teacher, Dr. John Kahaleanu, and was playing competitive golf at 12. During her career, she set course records at Hilo Country Club and in the Jenny K. Wilson tourney at Mid-Pacific Country Club. In 1956 she played on the LPGA tour, traveling with Jackie Pung. ‘Kainoa’ was for Margaret

SORRY to learn of the Oct. 16 death of Margaret Kainoa Taka, a travel industry veteran and former cruise director for Matson liners. Years ago, the song "Kainoa," made famous by Marlene Sai, was written for Margaret by her husband Jimmy Taka. "Jimmy wrote the song for Margaret when he knew he was dying," Marlene said. Andy Cummings put the music down on paper for Jimmy. Andy taught the song to his then teen-age niece Marlene ... I remember the aloha Margaret and fellow cruise director Kaui Barrett and people such as Lorraine Yomes and Leolani Blaisdell shared when I was lucky enough to make Matson liner trips. The boat days, with the fragrant leis, streamers, songs and hula with the Royal Hawaiian Band, are unforgettable ...
