CONTINUING

The Associate

Whoopi Goldberg plays a financial analyst who gets the best of her chauvinistic firm in this business comedy. (PG-13) At Cinerama, Enchanted Lake, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Mili-

lani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Big Night

A feast of a story that explores questions of family, artistry, religion, romance and more. (R) At Varsity.

Bulletproof

A police officer (Damon Wayans) is assigned to transport a former mobster (Adam Sandler) in a preposterous action comedy. (R) At Kapolei.

The Chamber

Thriller based on John Grisham's novel follows a young lawyer's struggle to save his grandfather from the Mississippi gas chamber. A solid performance from Gene Hackman as the grandfather can't offset the bad acting, bad dialogue, confusing dramatic structure and mixed emotional messages of the movie. (R) At Kapolei.

D3 The Mighty Ducks

The third in Disney's "Mighty Ducks" series is an enjoyable, good-natured kids' movie, fast-paced and full of hokey hockey action. This time around the Ducks are in high school, with poor-kid athletic scholarships to a rich kids' academy. Though Emilio Estevez receives top billing, his Coach Bombay character has a relatively minor role. (PG) At Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West.

First Kid

Sinbad plays a bodyguard hired to chase after the president's rambunctious young son in this mediocre kid comedy filled with slapstick and predictable jokes. It can be commended, however, for generally avoiding bathroom humor and age-inappropriate gags about sexuality. (PG) At Pearl-

ridge West.

First Wives Club

Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn are in top form as a trio of middle-age women who decide to seek revenge on their executive husbands who have dumped them for sweet young things. (PG) At Kahala, Kapolei, Nanakuli, Pearlridge West.

Fly Away Home

This animal, kid and family picture of the first order stars Jeff Daniels as a self-involved father who helps his sullen daughter Anna Paquin with her adopted geese. (PG) At Kapolei.

The Ghost and the Darkness

This literate and eerie true-life chiller stars Val Kilmer as 19th-century British engineer in in Africa wrestling with the possibility that the movie's title characters - two marauding lions, could be the physical embodiment of the spirit of evil. (R) At Enchanted Lake, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Marina, Mililani, Nana-

kuli, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row.

To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday

A family gathering on the second anniversary of a woman's death is staged to force her widower out of mourning. The film is not funny enough to be a ghostly comedy but is too whimsical and glib to be gripping drama. Peter Gallagher as the grieving man and Claire Danes as his daughter are so believable they almost bring the movie off. (PG-13) At Varsity.

The Glimmer Man

For a rock 'em, sock 'em action thriller, this Steven Seagal vehicle is a hopelessly slow-moving, slow-witted shaggy-dog tale. (R) At Kapolei, Pearlridge.

High School High

Though loaded with pratfalls, sight gags and an out-of-it hero (Jon Lovitz), "High School High" fails because it doesn't get its own joke. Instead of parodying earnest-teacher movies, it becomes one itself. (PG-13) At Kapolei, Keolu, Marina, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

This gawky, relentlessly earnest patchwork of film noir, action-adventure, psychological horror, comedy and touchy-feely sentimentality works, thanks to a luminous lead from Geena Davis and a show-stopping portrayal from Samuel L. Jackson. (R) At Kapolei, Mililani, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 2.

Michael Collins

Liam Neeson plays the title character and Julia Roberts is his stand-by-her-man fiancee in this epic, Neil Jordan-directed biography of the Irish revolutionary leader. (R) At Kahala, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row.

Sleepers

Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman give solid performances as a fatherly priest and washed-up attorney, respectively. Barry Levinson's drama follows the group of friends who cover up a killing that was in revenge of a heinous crime. (R) At Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row.

Stephen King's Thinner

An adaptation of King's novel about an overweight man who keeps getting thinner after being cursed by a gypsy, the movie has potential but never taps the theme which equates moral excess with physical excess. (R) At Aikahi, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Pearlridge, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 3.

That Thing You Do!

Tom Hanks' directorial debut follows a fictional rock band in the 1960s, on its climb to the top. Hanks also plays the band's manager. (PG) At Kahala, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Laie.
