WHEN an event opens with Genoa Keawe and her group, it's usually bound to be a success. Tuesday's 25th anniversary of the Hawaiian Regent, starting on the hotel deck where guests could view a magnificent sunset, was no exception. There was hula by keiki and adults, and Hawaiian, American and Japanese food. Guests later moved to the Ballroom, where Pacific Rim cuisine was served and Kapena entertained. The party wound up in the courtyard with dessert and entertainment by slack-key guitarist George Kuo ...

Maestro Samuel Wong is a pip and will become an island treasure. Sunday's guest was pianist Christopher O'Riley. He can really work over those ivories. Wong, O'Riley and O'Riley's girlfriend, actress-pianist Rebecca Cross, attended the post-concert bash at a Makiki estate co-owned by Mark and Kathy Ingoglia and Katsuhiko Takeda. Nick's Fishmarket lavishly catered the affair for the 200 guests, under G.M. David Nagaishi's watchful eyes. A brass quintet from Toho College of Music performed. THE Halekulani's Lewers Lounge crowd Thursday, which included Symphony musicians, got an added treat. Besides groovy jazz standards and ballads by singer Loretta Ables, bassist-singer Bruce Hamada and pianist Jim Howard, vocalists Mary Gutzi and Cathy Foy sang. Their rendition of "Happy Birthday" to me, with help from Susan Flowers and Margaret Murchie, was icing on my birthday cake. All those great gals can really dish the dirt, too ...

I'll be off trying all next week. Bye ...
