Lord is special
in isle film industry

Emme Tomimbang's "Hawaii Five-0" special to be shown at 7 tomorrow night on KHON makes me think of the series star, Jack Lord. In the 1970s, Jack and I had an annual lunch at the Kahala Hilton's Hala Terrace to discuss the show. We would order the "Jack Lord Special" from waitresses such as Elena Antonio, Alicia Antonio (no relation) and Dotty Yoshimoto. The "Special" is a glorified hamburger steak, made with lean chopped beef and smothered in sauteed mushrooms and onions. During one lunch, a woman tourist came up and asked Jack: "Aren't you Stoney Burke?" Jack said he indeed played title character "Stoney Burke" in that TV series. Then he asked, "But don't you watch 'Hawaii Five-0'?" The woman replied, "Oh no, we don't get 'Hawaiian Eye.'" ... The Mandarin chain now runs the Kahala. I had a "Jack Lord Special" there Tuesday in the Plumeria Cafe, formerly the Hala Terrace, as SuAnn Bamer and I, who have October birthdays, had our annual birthday lunch. SuAnn handles Hawaii's best-dressed list. I told Plumeria manager Didier Torre's crew how the "Special" was made and it came out just fine ...

JACK deserves tremendous credit because, in my opinion, he did more than anyone to build Hawaii's then-minute film business into a strong, respected industry. His work, both on and off the camera - especially after "Five-0" creator-producer Leonard Freeman died - kept that series alive and healthy during its remarkable 12-year, 1968-to-1980 run. "Five-0" developed many talented isle actors and the show's success brought other filmmakers here. "Five-0" also showcased Hawaii's beauty to the world, giving our visitor industry a huge boost. Mahalo, Jack! ...

Aloha tribute for Kruse

LOCAL and national labor leaders as well as management officials praised retiring Hawaii Newspaper Guild administrative officer Roy Kruse last weekend at the Cannon Club. Roy shared the spotlight with visiting Italian "Cardinal Vermicelli," also known as Frank DeLima. DeLima was a riot. The "cardinal" said that in Roy's church God is spelled G-o-l-f. He added that Roy's mom Olive wrote the pope many letters about Roy, her problem child. "Roy, listen to your mother," was the papal order. The cardinal kissed Olive and said: "The Holy Father wanted me to greet you and tell you to get off his back." Olive, 87, was in Seventh Heaven ...
