The Hawaii Opera Theatre will host "Opera Day" Oct. 12 and "Great Singers, Great Songs" Oct. 20.
"Opera Day" will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Borders Books & Music at Ward Centre. Admission is free.
The program includes children's activities, singing and informative displays about the 1997 opera season. There will be wigs and costumes to try on, a live children's opera, "Little Red Riding Hood," at 11:30 a.m., makeup sessions and a performance by the Hawaii Youth Opera Choir at 2 p.m.
Also on hand will be HOT's new general and artistic director, Henry G. Akina.
"Great Singers, Great Songs" is a benefit concert for the University of Hawaii-Manoa Music Department and the Hawaii Opera Theatre Education Guild.
The concert will feature island performers singing their favorite arias, songs and ensembles. Among the artists are Teresa Bomberger, Vicki Gorman, Laurence Paxton, Leda Asher Yager, Les Ceballos. Pianist Beebe Freitas will accompany.
Showtime is 4 p.m. at Orvis Auditorium on the UH campus. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students.
