Bookmobile won't go
anywhere near a library

QUESTION: I read about the plight of Kalihi Kai Elementary School and its inability to get a school library. I was wondering if it could be served by the state library system's bookmobile?

ANSWER: No, it's not possible, says Paul Mark, spokesman for the state librarian's office. "Our policy on bookmobiles is to provide outreach library services to all residents who are unable to use a fixed facility. Bookmobiles will visit rural areas based on factors such as distance from a library, physical capabilities of customers, etc."

Marks said the library's two bookmobiles do not service the Kalihi area because there is a facility there - the Kalihi Palama Public Library at 1325 Kalihi St., next to the Kalihi YMCA. The two Oahu bookmobiles circulate in the windward and leeward parts of the island.

Call the Kaneohe Library at 233-5676 for the Windward Oahu bookmobile schedule and the Pearl City Public Library at 453-6566 for leeward times.
