TODAY

Girl Writer Contest: Girls who have ideas to share with other kids can turn those ideas into books. Beyond Words Publishing is looking for writers ages 6 to 16 who suggest an unusual yet practical book for kids, similar to "Better Than a Lemonade Stand" or "100 Excuses for Kids."

Write one page about yourself, one page summarizing or outlining your book idea and a sample page from your book, and send them with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Girl Writer Contest, Beyond Words Publishing, 4443 NE Airport Road, Hillsboro OR 97124-6074. WEDNESDAY

Barnes & Noble: The American Girl Club meets 7 p.m. at the Kahala bookstore.

On Friday, Spot the Dog arrives for story time at 7 p.m.; Spot will also greet kids at noon Saturday and Sunday.



SATURDAY

Family Fishing Event: Bring bamboo poles, barbless hooks and bait to tempt tilapia, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Kaneohe. Admission for the catch-and-release fishing event is free. Don't forget walking shoes, bug repellent, rain gear and a picnic lunch. Reserve at 233-7323.

Spiderific: The Hawai'i Nature Center on Maui invites adventurers 6 and older to enter the world of the eight-legged, 1 to 3 p.m. Costs $5. Reserve at 244-6500, Maui.



SUNDAY

Animal Fair: Search for animals at work, play or rest on a forest hike, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Costs $5. Call the Hawai'i Nature Center at 955-0100.



CONTINUING

"SPORT" on display: Hands-on activities reveal the science behind athletics, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sept. 2 at Bishop Museum. Admission is $14.95 general, $11.95 youths, seniors and military. Call 847-3511.

"Aloha Kilolani: 35 Years of Hawaiian Skies": Highlights from the Bishop Museum Planetarium's 35-year history, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily, and 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Costs $3.50. Call 847-8201.

Tropical plant nature walk: 10 a.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden. Free. Bring walking shoes, insect repellent and rain gear. Call 233-7323 for reservations.

Train rides: Enjoy a 90-minute ride through Ewa 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Sundays with the Hawaiian Railway Society, 91-1001 Renton Road. Costs $8 general, $5 seniors and children. Call 681-5461 for reservations.



LOOKING AHEAD

The Goosebumps Club: Young fans of spooky tales meet 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at Barnes & Noble, Kahala.

Leaf Lovers: Children ages 6 to 8 explore the forms and functions of leaves, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Hawai'i Nature Center. Costs $5. Reserve at 955-0100.
