Maui money probe widens
in project linked to Kihano

A federal grand jury continues to investigate alleged money-laundering by two backers of an outpatient surgery center on Maui.

The case involves Hale Nani Partners and Evets Ltd.

Former state House Speaker Daniel Kihano, a partner in the project, was one of the original targets of the probe but was not among those indicted.

Attorney Howard T. Chang, who represents Hale Nani Partners, indicated in a May 6 letter to Assistant U.S. Attorney Elliot Enoki that new charges are likely and could involve additional defendants.

So far two of Kihano's business partners, Honolulu attorney Richard Frunzi and Maui health consultant Henry "Hank" Blakley, have been indicted for money laundering and conspiracy.

BOE stalls proposal on teacher pay raises

The state school board is declining to take a stand on teacher pay raises.

About 50 teachers and supporters were present at Thursday night's board meeting, when the board delayed a resolution supporting a pay increase.

Board member Ron Nakano, who is on the state team handling contract negotiations with the teachers union, says the resolution conflicts with the state's position on pay raises.

State negotiators oppose a 10 percent raise for teachers recommended by a Hawaii Labor Relations Board fact-finding panel.

Statements cast doubt that
fall was accident

Inconsistent statements made by a Waikiki man about the events surrounding his ex-girlfriend's fatal fall from a 30th-floor apartment they once shared led to his arrest Wednesday, police said.

Ann Marie Minatelli, 21, died July 19 of injuries consistent with a fall from that height.

The former boyfriend, 27, remains under investigation despite his release nearly an hour after he was booked Wednesday morning.

Police questioned him at the scene of Minatelli's death and again later, and his answers were not consistent, said homicide Lt. Allen Napoleon. "Based upon that plus people we spoke with, we had enough to arrest him for (suspicion of) manslaughter," Napoleon said.

Investigators continue to question those who were close to Minatelli and anyone who may have overheard the couple that night. The ex-boyfriend is suspected of breaking in or forcing his way into the apartment and contributing to her fall, police said.

Someone reported hearing Minatelli calling for help before she fell to her death, police said.
