Waving flag for Samoa

The weeklong Samoa-Hawaii Flag Day Festival kicks off tomorrow with an opening ceremony and entertainment from noon to 1 p.m. at Tamarind Park.

But the main events of the festival, which runs through Aug. 10, will take place at Keehi Lagoon Park with activities scheduled daily.

Among the highlights are a visit at the park Aug. 9 of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule'a with "Joe Onosai and the Men of War" performing a traditional Samoan greeting of the vessel and the dance group of about 300 men and women from the island of Manu'a.There will be cultural workshops and demonstrations, dance competitions, arts and crafts and sporting events. The festival culminates in a community parade Aug. 10 at 8 a.m.

The annual celebration commemorates the raising of the American flag in American Samoa in 1900.
